Mothers' Union

The Mothers' Union is an international Christian membership charity that aims to demonstrate the Christian faith in action through the transformation of communities worldwide. We work with people of all faiths and none in 83 countries to promote stable marriage, family life and the protection of children through praying, enabling and campaigning.

Our aims and objectives are:

  • To promote and support married life
  • To encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children
  • To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service
  • To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children
  • To help those whose family life has met with adversity

A Diocese report on Mothers Union at St George's, Cam, September 4th 2023.

Our vision and values

Our vision is of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships. This is not a vague hope, but a goal we actively pursue by praying, campaigning and enabling.

Mothers’ Union is a Christian mission organisation working with people of all faiths and none. Mothers’ Union is firmly rooted in a voluntary ethos centred on mutual respect and collaboration. Our governance, leadership and programmes are undertaken and driven by members within their own communities worldwide.

'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbour as yourself.'  Luke 10:27

Membership

Our members are not all mothers, or even all women. They are single, married, parents, grandparents, or young adults just beginning to express their social conscience. Mothers' Union provides, for all four million members, a network through which they can serve Christ in their own community - through prayer, financial support and actively working at the grassroots level in programmes that meet local needs.

Our Branch

Here at St. George’s we have 15 members. Our monthly meetings are held either in the church or at Elm Lodge on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2.00 p.m. Meetings consist of a service or a short act of worship, followed by a speaker. The meeting always features tea and cake, with members taking it in turns to act as hostesses.

We also we hold a monthly Bible Study and communion service at Elm Lodge on the second Monday of the month at 10.00 a.m. In the summer we arrange a garden party and an outing to a place of interest. We also make occasional visits to the lovely village of Randwick and join their members for a fund raising Open Meeting, featuring a speaker and a lovely tea.

Through our membership subscriptions and fundraising efforts we continue to support MU charities at home and abroad. We also actively help with the life of our church by participating in Open the Book, Baptisms, Little Church, Marriage Preparation Courses and Sunday morning worship.

We join with our Deanery members at the annual Lady Day Service and with all Diocesan branches at the Mary Sumner Day Picnic. These opportunities to meet with the wider circle of MU members give us great encouragement and strengthen our commitment towards our wonderful organisation.

Our main objective is prayerful support, and daily midday prayers help us to remember other MU members throughout the world in our ‘Wave of Prayer’. We use a prepared selection of prayers often including the following:

Midday Prayer

Jesus, Lord of life,
by the power of your word
and through your actions of love,
call us to be your disciples.

Give us strength to be different,
to stand up for justice and peace
and be signs of your reconciling love for all.

God of grace, enable your servants
to carry out your mission on earth
through the work of Mothers’ Union worldwide.

Mary Sumner Prayer

All this day, O Lord,
let me touch as many lives as possible for thee;
and every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken,
whether through the word I speak, the prayer I breathe, or the life I live.
Amen.

Mothers’ Union Prayer

Loving Lord,
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world in Jesus' name.
Amen.
